A WEEKEND OF ASANA PRACTICE AND IMMERSION INTO THE PRIMARY SERIES OF ASHTANGA YOGA
This weekend is all about asana. Together we will be looking at most asanas from the primary series of ashtanga yoga in detail, giving you options and goals in the poses and trying out different techniques for your practice. Knee safety will be particularly addressed in this workshop.
We will be looking at traditional vinyasa, how to set up and prepare for the poses, and also easier and accessible options when needed. It doesn’t matter wether you’re a yoga teacher, or if you have just started learning the practice – everybody is welcome!
Yoga Alliance certified teachers will get 6 hours of continuing education points to their license.
However, if you are already a bit familiar with the practice, you may get more out from this weekend. The program is tailored for people who have started practicing ashtanga yoga, and now wants to learn more, or get clarification on questions that have arisen.
You are NOT required to already be able to practice the whole primary series!
AFTER THE WEEKEND
After the workshop you will have clarity on how to practice the asanas from the primary series on ashtanga yoga with your unique body. Please bring a notepad and a pen if you want to take notes (there will be lots of info this weekend!)
For Alex, it’s important that yoga is practiced is a calm and meditative manner, where the breath plays the most central role. Furthermore, it’s important to him that the practices are taught in a safe, healthy and effective way for each student. As a yoga teacher it is important to understand that all people are different, and certain yoga postures and practices are simply not suitable for everybody.
BEGINNER REQUIREMENTS
Alex loves teaching new students. We will not have time to cover all the fundamentals of the practice during only this weekend, but this is not an obstacle for you to join. You will get lots of insights and help in the practice, but it helps if you are already familiar with some kind of physical yoga practice.
Please be prepared for a physical yoga asana practice, and as a beginner, the Saturday is mandatory, where we will be covering the breathing technique and a few fundamental principles of the practice as a quick recap before we start.
Please keep in mind, that learning the primary series of ashtanga yoga usually takes months or even years. This workshop is not a substitute for a regular practice.

Teachers are important
It is easy to walk astray from the path of yoga. Practicing regularly is much more important than practicing a long series every time, or doing lots of fancy poses.
For me personally, I can find some old less healthy habits sneak back in when I don’t practice regularly, and have longer breaks in my practice.
The best thing I know is to go away and practice and study yoga with my teachers, with no other distractions. Already after one week of daily regular practice, I start noticing shitfs happening in my mind.
Having a teacher to inspire you to practice, and to help keep you accountable is important.
I have been practicing about half of the intermediate series (Nadi Shodhana / second series) with my teachers in Helsingin Astangajoogakoulu, and I hope to start seeing my teacher Juha Javanainen a bit more often soon again.
A very big part of what I have learned after my yoga teacher training has come from Juha Javanainen and Petri Räisänen during their summer retreats and yearly workshops, always leaving me inspired to open my books at home to study more (Sutras etc…).
Other teachers that has influenced me in their workshops are: Kino MacGregor, Simon Borg-Olivier, David Garrigues, Eddie Stern. I’m really sorry if I forgot to mention anyone. There are so many I would like to give thanks to, including Suvi Hakala, Sue Woodd and Julie Hansen from the Seasonal Yoga team, responsible for my teacher training in 2014!
